Paddy Seaweed was born in Alert Bay. His mother's family originates from Village Island, while his father's family comes from Turnour Island. In 1978, Paddy received training in jewelry carving from Lloyd Wadhams. He initially had a keen interest in drawing, which subsequently evolved into wood carving, and eventually led him to work with silver and gold. Paddy's brothers, Alfred, Norman, and Rodney, are all skilled silver carvers.
