Product Type: Artwork
Claude Davidson (1924–1991), born in Old Massett on Haida Gwaii, was Chief of the village of Dadens and a respected Haida artist. He was the grandson of the legendary Haida carver Charles Edenshaw and the son of Robert Davidson Sr., a prominent cultural leader and master canoe-builder. Though Claude spent his early years working as a fisherman, he began carving in the 1950s, relatively late in life. He first worked in yellow cedar before turning to argillite, the prized slate-like stone found only on Haida Gwaii. A defining moment in his artistic journey occurred in 1944 when he accompanied his father on a hike up Slatechuck Mountain, the island’s primary source of argillite. Claude became known for his work in this medium and passed on the artistic tradition to his sons, Robert Davidson and Reg Davidson, both of whom are internationally recognized Haida artists.
Newly Matted and framed with archival matting, backing and glass.
