Hayward Russell (b -2024) was of Nova Scotian descent, belonging to the Mi'kmaq people. He was trained in carving by Indigenous carvers of the Pacific Northwest, and his work frequently depicted West Coast mythological creatures or animals. These subjects were inspired by the stories he heard and the form art he studied, which is so prominent along the coast.
