Kwakwaka'wakw art is a distinctive form of Northwest Coast art. Kwakwaka'wakw artists are known for their innovative approaches to expression, form, and their use of colors that go beyond tradition. Jackson Robertson, a 100% Kwakwaka'wakw artist, hails from the Tsawataineuk First Nation at Kingcome Inlet, BC, located at the northern tip of Vancouver Island. As a 5th generation carver with 45 years of experience, he is recognized as a master carver. Raised in Nanaimo by his grandparents and extended family, Jackson was surrounded by accomplished carvers, including his uncles. By age 14, he was already skilled in carving masks, bowls, talking sticks, and plaques. From there, his journey as a carver flourished, finding his passion in creating traditional designs inspired by legends and characters from his culture and Potlatch traditions. For Jackson, carving is about bringing joy to others through art that holds deep cultural meaning. His work carries a legacy that will be passed down through generation.
