Born in 1994, Adonis David is a Nuu-chah-nulth artist from the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation in Tofino, British Columbia. Coming from a rich lineage of artists, his creative roots are deeply tied to family and tradition. He is the son of renowned carver Doug David and grandson of master artist Joe David, growing up surrounded by the practices, stories, and visual language of his ancestors. His uncle, celebrated artist and master carver Patrick Amos, hails from the Mowachaht Band. Adonis primarily works as a painter, reimagining traditional Northwest Coast form line design with contemporary flair. His art blends learned composition, imaginative color palettes, and personal symbolism, honoring tradition while expressing his own voice. Through painting, he explores identity, resilience, and cultural continuity, drawing on both ancestral knowledge and lived experience. Living with lupus and an autoimmune condition affecting his spine, Adonis uses a wheelchair and faces significant health challenges. These experiences shape his perspective, adding depth, determination, and intention to his work. Despite physical barriers, he continues to pursue his passion for art with unwavering dedication.
