Symbol: The Chief of the Undersea World

The King of the Undersea, also called Komokwa, Kumugwe, or Copper Maker, is a central supernatural figure in Kwakwaka’wakw culture, known as the "Wealthy One." He is a mighty ruler who resides in a grand copper house beneath the sea, brimming with treasures. As the master and protector of seals, he has sea lion outposts guarding his home's entrance. Various sea creatures, including killer whales, loons, seals, sea lions, and sculpins, are closely connected to him, and he is said to be guarded by the Octopus.

He serves as the sea's Guardian, controlling the tides, creating winter storms, and ensuring summer's calm waters. He governs the riches washed ashore by the tides and the lives claimed by the sea. Additionally, he can grant powers to those he favors. Many humans strive to reach his underwater realm, and those who succeed return to their villages laden with wealth and treasures.
