Maquinna Hat - Whalers Hat
Maquinna Hat - Whalers Hat
Product Type: Indigenous Hat
This contemporary onion-domed hat evokes the distinctive whaler’s headgear seen in early depictions of Maquinna, the revered Nuu-Chah-Nulth chief of the late 18th century. Adorned with an elaborate design portraying two stylized whale hunts, the piece is preserved in outstanding condition and radiates striking visual allure. Bearing the name of the influential Mowachaht Nootka chief who encountered James Cook, the Maquinna Hat stands as a tribute to the vibrant heritage of the Nuu-Chah-Nulth (Nootka) People. By the early 20th century, it had become a symbol of prestige, reserved solely for a chief or whaler within the community.
This beautiful collector’s hat, crafted by Nuu-Chah-Nulth artist Robert (Nuukmas) Martin with traditional swamp grass, reflects incredible skill and cultural heritage. Measuring 10" x 11", it is signed and dated 2017.
