Thunderbird Killer Whale Spirit Pod
Thunderbird Killer Whale Spirit Pod
Product Type: Artwork
Mahtni-Ray Bob (b. 1960) is a celebrated artist known for his instantly recognizable work that brings to life the rich legends of his Nuu-chah-nulth and Coast Salish heritage. Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Mahtni was deeply influenced by his grandfather, Wallace Touchie, a skilled carver and canoe maker. This connection to tradition is reflected in his artistic practice, where he often works directly on red and yellow cedar panels, allowing the natural grain and tones of the wood to enhance his imagery. While cedar remains a central element in his work, Mahtni's canvas originals are equally striking. His unique approach—layering bold, two-dimensional figures over expansive landscapes and vivid horizons—sets his art apart, capturing both cultural depth and visual impact in every piece.
Thunderbird Killer Whale Spirit Pod-This is wonderful large painting of a pod of Killer Whales in the Salish Sea. Overtop of the scenic view is the depiction of the Great Thunderbird and Killer Whale representing the dramatic, sacred battle between spiritual power and Killer Whale. The myth of Thunderbird and Whale is a key part of the indigenous stories of the Pacific Northwest. It tells of an epic clash between the mighty Thunderbird, a supernatural force, and the Whale, often seen as a fearsome monster. While the details change from tribe to tribe, the story usually describes Thunderbird soaring over the ocean, snatching up Whale, and engaging in a fierce battle. Their struggle shakes the land, uproots trees, and flattens terrain, before ending with Thunderbird lifting Whale high into the sky and dropping it. The tale carries cultural and spiritual meaning, offering an explanation for natural events and the balance between powerful forces.
