Adonis David Born in 1994, Adonis David is a Nuu-chah-nulth artist from the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation in Tofino, British Columbia. Coming from a distinguished lineage of artists, his creative foundation is deeply rooted in family and tradition. He is the son of renowned carver Doug David and the grandson of master artist Joe David, and he was raised immersed in the practices, stories, and visual language of his ancestors. Adonis’s works primarily as a painter, creating contemporary interpretations of traditional Northwest Coast formline design. His work blends learned composition, imaginative color palettes, and personal symbolism, resulting in pieces that honor tradition while asserting his own artistic voice. Through painting, he explores identity, resilience, and cultural continuity, bringing forward both ancestral knowledge and lived experience. Living with lupus and an autoimmune condition that has affected his spine, Adonis navigates significant health challenges and uses a wheelchair. These experiences inform his perspective but do not define his work; rather, they contribute to the depth, determination, and intention behind his practice. Despite physical barriers, he continues to pursue his passion for art with focus and dedication. While painting remains his primary medium, he aspires to expand further into carving, continuing the family tradition and deepening his connection to his cultural heritage. For Adonis, his art is both a personal journey and a continuation of a powerful artistic legacy.
