Angus, Trevor
Heritage: Gitxsan, Wetsuweten
Trevor, born in Kispiox, BC, in February 1970, carries the name Tka’ast from the House of Wii Minoosik.
Trevor has been carving for most of his life, starting with his first plaque in grade four under the guidance of Victor Mowatt from Gitanmaax, who continued to teach him through high school alongside Dan Yunkws. During high school, he spent significant time at Ksan observing the carvers there.
After graduating, Trevor attended the Kitanmaax School of Northwest Coast Indian Art at Ksan in Hazelton, where he trained under master carvers Vernon Stephens and Ken Mowatt, completing the four-year program in 1998. He honed his skills in designing and carving plaques, ladles, panels, masks, rattles, paddles, and steaming bentwood boxes.
His journey of learning continues, including an apprenticeship with Phillip Janze in engraving gold and silver jewelry. Trevor feels grateful for the exceptional teachers he has had throughout his carving career and values the opportunities to watch and learn from master carvers like Earl Muldon and the late Walter Harris. He continues to learn from various artists, striving toward his lifelong goal of becoming a Master Carver, a dream he has pursued since picking up his first tools.
Trevor's vision of the paddle represents a female eagle and male eagle. The red is the female design with the black being that of the male, and the blue represents the sky.
Beautifully carved and painted 5-foot paddle.
