Johnny Mukwa, a gifted Woodland artist from Thunder Bay, Ontario, proudly carries his mixed Anishinaabe and Métis heritage into his work. Before finding his calling in Woodland-style painting, he experimented with abstract stone sculpture and Métis dot art. In February 2025, he began apprenticing with renowned Woodland artist Mark Anthony Jacobson, sparking his journey in this distinctive style. For 18 years prior, Mukwa worked as a civil engineering lab technician, honing his technical precision and attention to detail. Since embracing the Woodland style, he has earned recognition with several successful art shows in British Columbia’s Kootenay region. Known for his vibrant colors and intricate designs, his work is highly sought after by Woodland art collectors. Now based in Nelson, BC, Mukwa continues to create striking pieces that celebrate his heritage and artistic vision.
