Large Salish Raven

Brad Joseph Sr. was born in the Squamish Nation in 1959. He began drawing at the age of 9 and started carving wood at 12. 

He has been carving for over 50 years, learning from his late father, Stanley Joseph Sr., and his older brothers. Brad has seven brothers, all artists—six are carvers, and one is a painter. He primarily works with yellow and red cedar. 

Over the years, Brad has created countless carvings and takes pride in each one. He is especially proud of assisting his older brother, Stanley Joseph Jr., in carving totem poles, drawing inspiration from his father and brothers. 

As a proud Squamish Nation member, Brad values the tradition of working with wood and has passed on his knowledge to younger generations, including his two sons, teaching them as he was taught to carry on these traditions.

Beautifully crafted from yellow cedar and finished with varnish, featuring intricate carvings, abalone and copper inlays, and topped with a cedar bark headdress.
