Salish Eagle
Salish Eagle
Product Type: Carving
Roger Johnnie, of Coast Salish (Snuneymuxw) heritage, was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, in 1984. From a young age, he was captivated by the artistry of his uncle, the renowned Francis Horne, whose carving inspired Roger’s own passion for the traditional artforms of his ancestors. As a teenager, his interest deepened, and he began carving under the mentorship of established artist Jackson Robinson. Determined to refine his craft, Roger later studied with Gino Seward, further honing his skills. While he is best known for his intricately carved plaques, Roger has expanded his artistic repertoire to include the creation of striking masks and captivating sculptures, celebrating and preserving the rich cultural heritage of his people.
This is an extraordinary wall hanging of an eagle, adorned with red cedar, carved from yellow cedar, and painted. It measures 22 inches in length, with the main carving measuring 11 by 4 1/2 inches.
