Nuu-chah-nulth Totem Pole Carving Adze
Nuu-chah-nulth Totem Pole Carving Adze
Product Type: Tool
Traditional Nuu-chah-nulth woodworkers of the Pacific Northwest Coast historically utilized specialized hand tools such as the D-adze and elbow adze to skillfully rough out, scoop, and sculpt western red cedar into monumental creations, intricate house posts, and sturdy ocean-going dugout canoes.
A carving adze has a uniquely shaped hardwood handle, often made from Pacific yew, maple, or alder, that fits comfortably in the hand. Its design allows for precise, controlled downward or swinging cuts.
This carving adze is part of a collection that came directly from a Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation member and a prominent family figure. It’s a remarkable handmade piece, perfect as a collectible or a practical tool.
18" overall, with a length of 12" from the tip of the cutting steel to the head, and a thickness of 1 3/4". The blade is bolted and the drill holes are epoxy filled.
