Thuderbird & Whale - Jacob Joe
Thuderbird & Whale - Jacob Joe
Product Type:
Jacob Joe (1958-2014) of the Cowichan Tribes created a carving that depicts the story of 'Tzinquaw nem's Qwunus' (Thunderbird and Whale).
Story
The Cowichan River was a source of abundance for the Cowichan People, with its rivers, bay, and mountains offering an ample supply of food. However, there came a time when the salmon vanished from the Cowichan and Koksilah Rivers under mysterious circumstances. It was discovered that a Supernatural Killer Whale had taken over the mouth of the river, preying on the salmon.
The Cowichan people attempted to repel the whale but were unsuccessful. In their plight, they sought the help of their Medicine people, who invoked Tzinquaw, the Thunderbird. Following four days of fervent prayer, the Thunderbird manifested and battled the whale, ultimately rescuing the salmon. This tale is a testament to the profound reverence the Indigenous people hold for nature and the Supernatural.
An extraordinarily exquisite, finely carved vintage Yellow Cedar plaque with Abalone and Copper elements, measuring 47" x 10".
