Wildman
The Wildman features prominently in the mythology of various Northwest Coast tribes, such as the Coast Salish. These tribes recount tales of transformer figures like Xa:ls, who molded the world by transforming people, animals, and the landscape into their present forms. Moreover, Salishan oral narratives encompass traditional stories told by speakers of the Salishan languages, residing in British Columbia and parts of the United States.
Wilbur Canute was known for his distinctive carving technique and finish in his mask carvings, often using Red Cedar, with dimensions such as 11 1/2" x 7".
