Woman - Whorls - Wisdom
Woman - Whorls - Wisdom
Product Type: Artwork
In *Women, Whorls, Wisdom*, Dylan Thomas explores the concept of the sacred mother—feminine wisdom and leadership that shaped and sustained the cultural systems of his ancestors. He honors the many women who have nurtured and guided him, including his mother and grandmothers, and reflects on the importance of respected female figures in Salish communities for his two daughters as they grow.
In Coast Salish culture, women played vital roles in logistical, diplomatic, and ceremonial life. Anthropologist Wayne Suttles observed that key cultural objects like ceremonial masks and rattles were created in collaboration between male carvers and female wool or bark weavers. This tradition continues today, with artists such as Susan Point and Kelly Cannell among the most respected contemporary Coast Salish artists.
The print’s circular design evokes a spindle whorl—one of the most frequent motifs in Coast Salish art and a tool of high cultural significance, enabling women to weave textiles of spiritual and social value. At the top of the design is Qeyux, the supernatural otter.
This limited edition silk screen print, *Women, Whorls, Wisdom*, was hand-produced through screen printing. It is the only edition of this design, with each copy inspected and signed by the artist. All trial prints have been destroyed, and the printing stencils obliterated.
