Paddles hold a vital place in the culture of the Northwest Coast First Nations. They function as both practical tools and ornamental items, crafted with the same care and pride as canoes. Historically, intricately carved paddles have navigated the vast cedar canoes through the coastal waters of the Northwest Pacific. Beyond their navigational use, paddles have played roles in ceremonial dances, served as formidable weapons, and stood as symbols of travel, the ocean, and the voyage of life.

Contemporary West Coast Native Paddles are frequently adorned with intricate carvings and paintings that reflect traditional narratives, symbols, and designs unique to each nation. They may also feature inlays of abalone, mother of pearl, or other materials of significance. While they remain functional, today's paddles are primarily crafted as exquisite art pieces. The design of a paddle can differ in shape and size, tailored to the user. This is largely because men and women have distinct paddling styles; women typically have a faster, splashier stroke, while men's strokes are deeper and more forceful. The paddle's form also changes based on its use for paddling or steering, and whether it is meant for the ocean or river. Broad paddles are used at the boat's stern for steering, while sharply pointed paddles serve multiple purposes: hunting, spearing fish, quiet water entry, securing the canoe, or as a weapon in warfare.
